Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time – Sunday, 31st January 2010
...Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

Jesus said: “I tell you solemnly, no prophet is ever accepted in his own country”. The word prophet conjures up the image of someone who foretells the future, a bit like a fortune-teller. No! A prophet is someone who gets to the deepest reality of human life and is able to proclaim that this deepest reality will come to the surface sooner or later and calls us to make it sooner. Generally people don’t like to hear about these deepest realities because they get used to the way things are. A good example of this is: the deepest reality of marriage is that it is a sacrament, a source of Christ’s presence in and salvation of the world we live in. Couples need to do a lot more to bring their love to that pitch. Every home is a Domestic Church, a sacred place. Every parish is the living Body of Christ. We have a lot of change to work on.

Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading : Jeremiah 1: 4-5.17-19
Before I formed you in the womb I knew you; before you came to birth I consecrated you; I have appointed you as prophet to the nations.

Second Reading: Corinthians 12: 31 – 13:13
There are three things that last: faith, hope and love; and the greatest of these is love.

ST MARY’S GAC, BANAGHER

U14 Boys Football training on Saturday mornings from 11am to 12.30pm in Fincairn Hall. We will need a copy of all U-14 players birth certificates plus two recent passport size photographs in order to register them for the Feile. These will be requested in the next few weeks from parents.

We are entering a Girls U-14 Football Team in the Feile – if you are interested in hosting two girls over the first weekend in July contact Kevin Moore or Kevin Lynch.

Club Lotto – 26th January 11, 13, 15 and 23. £15 each to James McCormick, Nora McLaughlin, M O’Neill, Kacey Shiels, Hugh Breslin and Kathleen Hasson. Next weeks Jackpot £1,100

Over the years the Lotto has been a good fundraiser for St Mary’s GAC. Currently, there are some areas of the Parish which do not have collectors. If you feel that you could collect, at even a few houses, in your area please let us know…. If you wish to pay for a line or two in our weekly Lotto please contact a Committee Member. Like all GAA clubs, St Mary’s is a Parish Club and needs the input from the Parish to help maintain and develop it for the future Footballers, Hurlers and Camogs of Banagher. Remember – if you’re not in – you can’t Win and your £1 may even be helping to train a member of a future Sam Maguire winning team!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Membership – for all Senior Players and Members is now due. The fee is £10 for the year and all Players must be fully paid members as this ensures they are properly registered and insured with the GAA. If you have not already done so, please contact Michelle Devine to pay this year’s fee.

Any one 18+ may also now pay their Membership fee of £10 to Michelle for the year – this again, helps with the running costs of the Club. Being a paid-up Member allows you to vote at the Annual General Meeting and helps ensure the future of the Club. … If you have friends or family who have moved away from the parish – perhaps abroad, who would still like to help support St Mary’s - get in touch with someone on the Committee to organize a means of support …….. Remember to tell them to keep in touch via the website www.banaghergac.com
The New Committee wish to thank the people of Banagher for the support given to the Club since Fr McNally’s dream became reality – The voluntary support has been exemplary but unfortunately the Club also requires funding to function from day to day. Any assistance, however small or large, is welcome – maybe £1 or £2 on the lotto each week or becoming a fully paid member by paying the £10 membership fee.

Club Gear Shop will re-open on Tuesday 2nd February from 8pm to 9pm

PARISH LOURDES PILGRIMAGE

Traditionally this is held every second year. Because of the cost, availability of flights from Belfast and the difficulty of getting Priests to cover the Parish Masses during the Pilgrimage it has not been possible to organize the Pilgrimage this year. We will, however, travel in 2011 instead. There are still places on the Diocesan Pilgrimage from 16th to 21st July – contact 02871 260293.

ST PETER & ST PAUL’S PARENTS ASSOCIATION would like to thank everyone who supported our Christmas fundraiser. A total of £911 was raised. Well Done Everyone!! Winners of the draw were Owen McLoughlin - £200; Lisa O’Hara - £100; Orla McLoughlin - £50. Ms McCourt – the Hamper.

THE IRISH CHILDREN’S PILGRIMAGE TRUST is taking children/young people with special needs (both physical and learning disability) from the ages of 9-21, from all over Ireland, to Lourdes on Easter Sunday (4th – 10th April 2010).
