GOOD FRIDAY is a day of fast and abstinence.
This means we eat only one main meal and two
very small meals. Fasting is closely associated
with prayer; that is why we are asked to fast
as part of our Lenten sacrifices on Ash Wednesday
and Good Friday. The other half of the sacrifice
this day is abstaining. This meant traditionally
eating fish in place of meat as this was seen
as a sacrifice, but today many of us prefer
fish to meat anyway, so there is no sacrifice
in that. We should abstain from food we enjoy
this day. That is the true meaning of abstinence.
