Sunday 5th July 2009

14th Sunday in Ordinary Time

Jesus said to them: “A prophet is only despised in his own country among his own relations and in his own house”. One of the mistakes we easily and often make is to think that what we see is all there is to see; what we know is all that there is to know. We do this about ourselves as well as about those close to us. There is always so much more to know about ourselves and certainly about each other. In marriage and family life, for example, we need to constantly look for and acknowledge the goodness that is there and set it free. Our homes should be places of praise instead of criticism as is so often the case. The same is true in a parish community. There is so much richness in every parish that never gets a chance to come to the surface. This is a week for letting that happen.

Fr. Johnny Doherty, C.Ss.R.

14th Sunday of the Year

First Reading Ezekiel 2: 2-5
Ezekiel’s mission is to people who have turned against God. They do not want to listen to what he says, but he reminds them that his words are the words of the Lord.

Second Reading 2 Corinthians 12: 7-10
I shall be very happy to make my weaknesses my special boast so that the power of Christ may stay over me.

Gospel Mark 6: 1-6
Jesus is amazed at the lack of faith in those who would not accept him.

However, as the summer holidays are now upon us, please note that Junior Choir will be suspended during the months of July and August and will recommence in September. OLDER PEOPLE IN YOR AREA NEED YOUR HELP – Did you know that there are older people living near you who spend a lot of their days alone, and sometimes find it very difficult to get to the shops or to medical appointments. Family members can be very willing but often have other commitments and older people can be very reluctant to ask friends or neighbours for help. Flexicare is a service that is set up to address this very problem. A project coordinator liaises with social workers to identify the older people who need the service and organizes for a local volunteer or visit them, take them shopping or chaperone them to hospital or the doctors. This is a lovely volunteering opportunity and is very rewarding as the volunteer can see first hand the good that they are doing. The older person appreciates the fact that this service is being provided willingly by someone who is not being paid to help. All volunteers are vetted, trained and supervised. We are currently looking for volunteers in Waterside, Eglinton, Claudy, Park, Prehen, Newbuildings and Strathfoyle. If you would like more information or would like to volunteer with Flexicare please contact either North West Volunteer Centre on 02871 271017 or Jenna at LCDI on 777 65438 or inquiry@limavadyvb.com
